Phillipas Fox Hunt by Somerville Ross - 1122 Words

The story by Somerville Ross, â€Å"Philippa’s Fox Hunt† was set in Ireland. A recently married couple Mr. and Mrs. Yeates were featured adapting to a new environment. The new place was characterized by new social activities that were not common in their previous residence. They had to learn new skills such as riding horses and hunting. Mr. Yeates who narrated the story described his life after marriage and how events had shaped his marriage. At the very beginning I was able to pick an element of symbolism; a newly married couple will naturally start a new life and similarly in the story the couple ventured into a new society where almost everything was new just in the same way when two people get married to each other. The starting of the†¦show more content†¦Women were seen to dominate over men. Mr. Yeates said that he felt privileged by the fact that he could get on with Lady Knox: â€Å"chiefly, I imagine, because I was a worm before her, and thankfully permitted her to do all the talking† (Fox 1). Mr. Yeates was being submissive to what Lady Knox said. Mrs. Knox had sometime back fought with Mr. Hamilton. From that time on she was vengeful because she could not attend Mr. Hamilton’s church. She drove to a church many miles away leaving Hamilton’s church near her home. Lady Knox said with sarcasm, â€Å"I wish I’d fought with him myself, he gives us forty minutes every Sunday† (Fox 1). This showed disrespect for men by the women in society. Mrs. Knox, in a different instance, scolded a young man: â€Å"Jeremiah Regan! Come down out of that with that pitchfork! Do you want to kill the fox you fool?† (Fox 1), and the young man in respect responded, â€Å"I do not, your honor, ma’am† (Fox 1). It is ironical that Mr. Yeates defended his wife who dominated over him. He worked so hard while the wife did not care about work. Later on he forced him to buy what she wanted by commanding him. He had spent his time in â€Å"ceaseless warfare with drains, eaves hoots, chimneys, pumps†¦Philippa, however, proved adorably callous to these and similar shortcomings† (Fox

John, oh John, it would be easier if you left your wife and flower out the purity of our love with me. We could leave; go to a place where we will be satisfied for the rest of our lives. But you broke my heart. I tried to couple with you. I still remember my accelerated heartbeat when our bodies came closer; you should have kissed me. But you did not. Instead, you do not want to know anything about me. I truly thought that you would fall in my arms. And I did not feel guilty about our forbidden love for one breath of my life. I would do it again, just for you John, for our love. I never felt such true love in my life. I never had a mother who would love me no matter what happens. You were the only light in my life. And this light disappeared when you decided to turn your back on me. You cannot resist me, I know that. You still love me, you have to love me, and I am the only one for you. So I will do whatever it takes to reunite with you again. I do not care about Elizabeth or her devilishly children, they should burn in hell. Oh yes, Elizabeth, you honest, well-behaved holy woman, you will perceive my choler. You will regret dismissing me. I am not the one to blame for the emptiness in your marriage. Besides I am the one of us two who makes him blessed to be a member of this world. I have a plan. I shall not rest until I receive what I deserve. People may die. But there is a price for every purchase in this world. In my case it is the craving for revenge. Revenge, revenge, you are sweet bitter. I need to make sacrifices. Witchcraft is the problem’s solution. Tituba will help me. She is from the Barbados and she is informed about other spirits. We used to meet in the woods. We dance. Sometimes we get naked. Last time we drank chicken blood in order to kill Elizabeth Proctor. I think Parris saw us dancing in the woods. Betty is not doing well. But I do not care about her state. If she says a word about us drinking blood I will kill her. I already warned her. She will listen, she is bright. All the other maids do not mind to manipulate Salem. It is a game. We will never give up because we started it. I am awfully enthused to see Elizabeth hang. Proctor is clever. He will know that I am behind all this mystic witchcraft. Maybe then he will know how important he is to me. Some people are going to die. I think we are going to name 19 people in the court. Mary Warren is a good girl, too good. She might tell the truth about everything. I need to be prepared. She will not be the one to destroy my genius plan. I already put too much effort in it. No one can stop me. No one can stop the girls from Salem. We are born to be successful. We are born to get what we want. We will kill inhabitants of Salem. We will be the winners of this game I write the rules. I am the leader. After the witch trials: Dear Diary, John is dead. I never wanted him to die. I loved him too much. He is gone now. He will never come back. I offered him to leave with me, I had the money but he did not want to be with me. He did not want me, Abigail Williams. I miss him; I miss his warm hands and his soft skin. I miss how he looked at me. Elizabeth it is your entire fault. You should have died. Why him and not you? I tried my best. I pointed at innocent people. Innocent people hanged because of us. We killed them. We had to kill them. They had to die. I enjoyed the relieving moment when someone was hanged. It felt right. I felt euphoric. They were the zenith of my life. I knew that Mary Warren would act Puritan. She is just like Elizabeth. I hate her. The Court did not believe her. We were too strong. She was too weak, poor girl. She was sweating like a hounded pig when the judge was questioning her. She needs to learn how to lie. When she knew that the judges would not believe her she gave up and came to our safe side. But now John is dead because of her. I am selfish. I take my life over his and I do not regret it. John had his chance to come with me. It was his choice to hang. I want to live and I will. I will find another man, a better man who appreciates my effort and love. I will be happy and blessed. Until then I will do everything to hide the truth from the light. Salem will never be clever enough to hunt the actual witches of the town. We are responsible for the death of 19 human lives. We are beasts. Try to catch us. The game goes on. Make big jumps in your career and leaving others miles behind? Talk and write letters to other people that others can’t communicate? Well, you can get all this if you can speak English well. There are many more advantage for those who can speak English well. Let me brief you some of the advantages. The motivation to learn English in postcolonial nations like Malaysia, is no longer the compulsion of imperialistic colonialism. Current motivation is partly directed by politics, and primarily driven by the growth of information technology in science and technology and world economics. The use and need of English language in Malaysia has become more important nowadays. As mentioned by Crystal (1995) found in Ganakumaran (2007) studies, she suggests six reasons for the spread of the English language in Malaysia. 1. Historical (i. e. as a result of a colonial legacy); 2. Internal politics (i. e. he maintenance of English as a neutral language of communication between different ethnic groups); 3. External economic reasons (i. e. to participate in international trade and business); 4. Practical reasons (i. e. for international utilitarian functions); 5. Intellectual reasons (i. e. for acquisition of information on science, technology and on academic subjects); 6. Entertainment (i. e. to be part of the mainstream popular culture). The age of pragmatism has forced the need for postcolonial nations like Malaysia to negotiate priorities nationalism and internationalism in favour of the English language.A validation of this negotiation in Ganakumaran (2007), by our previous Prime Minister Tun Mahathir (1999), saying that learning in English language will reinforce the spirit of nationalism when it is used to bring about development and progress for the country and true nationalism means doing everything possible for the country, even if it means learning the English language. In another finding in Ganakumaran (2007) by Pennycook (1994). The apparent difference between the present-day spread of the English language to that of the colonial period is that it is natural, neutral and mutually beneficial, as it is the result of globalization. Neutral, for it is considered a transparent medium of communication and mutually beneficial because of the assumption that international communication occurs on a co-operative and equitable footing. As a result, English is the most widespread lingua franca in the world, a status it has achieved because of its large number of non-native speakers from geographical locations scattered around the world. Hence, the label English has been applied to many forms of the language: American English, British English, Indian English, West African English, Singaporean English, Australian English, etc. This heterogeneous situation gives rise to comparison and evaluation between the varieties Based on research by Ru (2010). With globalisation and the advent of information technology, the English language has become more important for second language. It was also found in Bolton (2008) saying that the contemporary visibility and importance of English throughout the Asian region coupled with the emerge nce and development of distinct varieties of Asian Englishes have played an important part in the global story of English in recent years. Advantage during the jobs interviews. Some business that deal with international clients and suppliers rely on English speaking employees to help with operations to interpret, translate and communicate with English speaking customers and clients. Being fluent in English can improve employment opportunities. You’ve probably read of the many ways you need to prepare for a job interview and heard about how to dress and to act. While all of these things are important it is also important to pay attention to your English. When you talk to some one that uses poor English, the first thought that comes to your mind is this person is unintelligent.Would you hire this person for a job? The answer to this question is probably no. If someone use poor English, it is likely that they are unintelligent or uneducated. People will always judge you by the way you look and by the things you say. When in a job interview you can’t be lacking in either area. The first step in preparing for your job interview is to practice speaking. In addition to job opportunities, there are other opportunities available for those who fluent in English. Fluent in English can improve the chances of being accepted into advanced training programs or universities in English speaking countries.Travel The English language is predominantly spoken throughout the world, so international travelers may find that English can make their travels a little easier. Most hotel and restaurant employees, as well as store merchants, probably speak English to some degree. Crystal (2003), mentioned English is a global language. You can hear on television spoken by politicians from all over the world. Whenever you enter a hotel or restaurant in a foreign city, they will understand English, and there will be an English menu. AcademicsEnglish language is the language of academics all over the world, with a large number of research conducted, written and presented in English. Knowing English very much helpful for scholars who wish to communicate their ideas or perhaps their research findings to peers in their field. Statement by Tun Mahatir Mohamed found in research by Gill (2005), when he was asked the important of English, he said that education is for the purpose of knowledge. If you have to use a language which makes the knowledge more easily accessible, you should use that language, †¦. Our education system is like any other education system. It is meant to enable us to acquire knowledge. If we have the knowledge available in the national language, by all means, do†¦. but the fact is that in science the research that is being done is moving at a very fast pace. Everyday literally thousands of papers on new research is being published and practically all of them are in English. To translate English into Bahasa, would require a person with three skills. Skill in the two languages and skill in the subject that is to be translated and we don’t have very many people who are qualified to do that or who wish to do that.
